- after 35 years in the Army; in Washington, D.C. The politically
- deft general who won popular acclaim during the Persian Gulf
- War stepped down in an elaborate outdoor ceremony at which President
- Clinton awarded him the Medal of Freedom. In doing so, Clinton
- warmly praised the man with whom he had clashed on a number
- of issues, most notably the role of gays in the military. The
- first African-American to become the nation's top soldier, Powell
- is writing his memoirs for $6 million and is often mentioned
- as a prospect for high political office--including the highest.
